Cape Fear River Basin Studies Program

The Cape Fear River Basin Studies Program is an opportunity for students to engage in interdisciplinary, place-based education. This program defines “place” by the shared waters and land of the Cape Fear River Basin. Unlike boundaries created by humans, defining place by watersheds emphasizes our shared place, connections and dependence on one another. This approach allows students to learn from those working both within and outside their field of study while they develop a practice of seeking deep understanding of and engagement with their place. Portraits in Ebony

The police killings of several black men shook the Guilford community as they did the world. In a subsequent address to faculty and staff, the President of Guilford College, Jane Fernandes, asked a challenging question to the Guilford community: "Where is Guilford's voice in the national dialogue about policing?" Multicultural Leadership Scholar Tawanna Maryland contacted the Guilford College Art Department, the Guilford College Art Gallery, Jackson Middle School Art Program (Greensboro, NC), and the Guilford College Center for Principled Problem Solving with an idea for a project called "Portraits in Ebony."

This project sought to recognize and honor Black leaders in the Guilford College community through a series of portraits. Black leaders serving in diverse roles in the campus community were invited to be captured by volunteer Guilford student and faculty artists. The portraits were collected and woven together for a featured exhibition and silent auction in the Guilford College Art Gallery. Approximately $500 was contributed through the silent portrait auction. Proceeds went support an arts and language program designed by the project group to be implemented at Jackson Middle School. Finally, as a part of the Portraits in Ebony project, 6th grade art students from Jackson Middle School experienced a Guilford campus art and history tour, a black leadership exchange and networking event, and a tour of the Portraits in Ebony exhibition in the Guilford Art Gallery.
